The Greatest 90's Pro Wrestling Video Games

Let's face facts - There was nothing better than growing up in the 90's, and if you were a wrasslin' fan, there was nothing like defying your bedtime (sometimes your parents) every monday night to watch either WWF Raw or WCW Nitro. It translated into buying the $6 Action Figures, the trading cards, the VHS tapes we rented at Blockbuster (RIP), and when we didn't have a trampoline in our backyard to pay respects to those bullshit "Don't Try This At Home" Advertisements - we had a collection of the best wrestling games ever fucking produced to reenact our favorite matches; Games that we literally can't stop playing to this very day.

If you grew up in the 90's, you had it made in that department. So let's open up the vault and take a stroll down memory lane to some of the classics that came out in the 90's. I know, I know; WWF No Mercy isn't on the list, but it came out in 2000. I'll make up for it, i promise.

WCW vs. NWO Revenge (N64)

Starting this list off with a bang (No Pun attended DDP), WCW vs. NWO Revenge was a near perfect simulation of a fatally flawed brand. Featuring the Video Game Debut of Goldberg, nothing beat spearing the neighborhood kids over and over again. Don't forget rotating the analog stick to kick out of every single pinfall and making matches last for hours. That's how i lost the most amount of friends.

WWF Wrestlemania 2000 (N64)

When Acclaim dropped the ball, the now defunct THQ was quick to pick up the WWE License and pump out a game using the WCW/NWO Revenge Engine. Great game, super addicting and being able to play as Chris Jericho within the first 4 months of his signing to the roster wasn't a bad touch either.

WCW vs. NWO World Tour (N64)

This game blew our little minds when it first hit the Nintendo 64 in 1996, and while it might be a direct port from the Japanese Version (Virtual Pro Wrestling 64), it's just as good if not better. Besides slipping in famous folks under different names like Muhammad Ali as Joe Boxer? Well played THQ.

WWF Royal Rumble (SNES)

Anytime i saw that bullshit LJN rainbow on the box, i knew the game was likely an abortion - but not going to lie, WWF Royal Rumble was super fun. The Royal Rumble Mode was super replayable and featuring a large cast of notable superstars? Beyond fun.

WWF Rage in the Cage (Sega CD)

Shame nobody had a Sega CD to play WWF Royal Rumble's follow-up, Rage in the Cage.

Virtual Pro Wrestling 2 (N64)

Despite never being released in the states and not being able to read a lick of it without a emulator with a solid translation patch, this game was nothing short of perfect. The game was awesome, with a MMA Mode and some of the most innovative moves ever seen in a Wrestling game - Virtual Pro Wrestling 2 was light-years ahead of it's time.

WWF Warzone (PS1 & N64)

After playing WWF In Your House, nothing shocked the shit out of us more than Acclaim coming out with a good game. You gotta admit, Acclaim in the 90's was either hit or miss - which resulted in their doom anyway. It was in noway a WCW/NWO Revenge killer, but with a fun multi-player mode and a killer Custom Wrestler creator, this was a great first WWF 3-D Game.

WWF Wrestlefest (Arcade)

This was button mashing bliss and the first great WWF game in arcades and bowling alleys across the country. Now if they can make WWF Wrestlefest into a Xbox or Playstation Store port, i could die happy.

Fire Pro Wrestling S (Sega Saturn)

It took YEARS for this franchise to hit american shores, but fuck yeah, Fire Pro Wrestling on Game Boy Advance was worth the wait. If you thought that game was superb, Fire Pro Wrestling S on Sega Saturn Japan was flawless. Light years ahead of it's time, too bad nobody owned a Sega Saturn to play it.

Saturday Night Slam Masters (SNES)

Capcom busting out an Street Fighter Version of Pro Wrestling? Legendary. First released in Arcades to later ported to the SNES, Saturday Night Slam Masters wasn't exactly the most replayable game, but a fun weekend rental anyway.

WWF Attitude (PS & N64)

Acclaim did something was super rare in the 90's, and that was following up a good game with an even better game. WWF Attitude was a huge improvement over WWF Warzone, featuring an even more robust Create A Character and Career Mode. Their luck would run out right after releasing this game, with shitting out 2 Terrible ECW games that was a direct ripoff of this game.

And you know what. Screw it. I know it came out in 2000 but this game deserves it's due...
